I'm still at my office until later this afternoon when I leave for Iowa City, the first stop on my way to Minneapolis for the Public Library Association's 2008 National Conference. As usual, I packed more than I wanted to and still feel like I didn't pack enough. For this conference, I have the added joy of driving up four other librarians who we couldn't place on the 55-Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09404698893551531546noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5670977.post-89952994196735183682008-02-29T21:40:00.003-06:002008-02-29T22:00:23.018-06:00BAM Challenge - Heart

Yeah...kind of ran out of time on my own challenge. I'm a good book group leader, aren't I? The book I wanted to do is still sitting unfinished in the pile of books I brought back from Midwinter. However! I did gobble down a historical romance that I got as an Advance Reader Edition in Philly.

Happy Thanksgiving to those celebrating in the U.S. The blog is going on hiatus until sometime during ALA Midwinter. The holidays being one reason, and my committee work being the other. For anyone considering going for one of the many book award committees in ALA, be prepared to read. A lot. At this point, my projected reading schedule needs to be a book a day. Good thing I sent my "Open letter to incoming LIS students" to Carnival of the Infosciences for inclusion back in August. Chadwick put out a call for hosts for next week on Twitter, and I answered the call. Next Monday, October 29th, I'll be hosting issue #82. Ready for another essay? Some background, first. I know I’ve mentioned before my status as a third-generation librarian. When I first considered going to library school 6 ½ years ago, 1 ½ years out of college (yes, for those math inclined, that means I’m now 30), my mom gave me two different lists of laws. I'm working on yet another one of my essay length posts, but until then, here are some things I want to highlight:

I know I haven't summarized yesterday for you, but I promise to do so by the end of the weekend. Today was the day my ALA wrapped up for the most part. I had the NMRT Executive Board meeting first thing this morning. While it was tough to get up so early, later I was glad to have it out of the way. I got back to the convention center in good time thanks to the Metro for the Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09404698893551531546noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5670977.post-90434365487944058982007-06-23T22:12:00.000-05:002007-06-23T22:57:52.487-05:00ALA Annual - Day Two

I hit the exhibits first thing as I decided not to go to the session I'd originally planned on attending. I've got a few exhibitors I need to ask questions of for work, and after I got my Darwin bobblehead from Greenwood, I got some leads to follow up on from one of the vendors. Well, other than not wearing enough layers to keep me properly insulated in the room where my committee was meeting, today was a productive day. We managed to get our work done early enough for me to make it over to the convention center in time to check in and go to the NMRT 101 session. Just a note that I'm working my way east to DC. Tomorrow is the flight first to Detroit and then on to DC. Expect somewhat daily updates. With the recent posts by Joy Weese Moll and Michelle Boule, I got to thinking about what success means for me. First, though, I’d like to ruminate on what the meaning of success is.
Is there a universal yardstick for success? I think not. Michelle’s comment perfectly describes my viewpoint: “I define my own success, it does not look like yours, and I am ok with that.” FromKatiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09404698893551531546noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5670977.post-89823065193102171102007-05-04T09:19:00.000-05:002007-05-04T09:40:58.192-05:00Not feeling love for ALA?
I believe in the importance of having professional organizations. But kind of like when I went off to college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I also believe that you need to find your niche because they can otherwise be way to huge and overwhelming. With my envy for those going to CiL this weekend at the fore of my thoughts, and seeing Michelle's post in my Bloglines this morning, I realized Twitter would be good for those of us who aren't married to their cell phones for text messaging purposes, but adore our PDAs when trying to notify friends of our locations at conferences.
